Bio

I am a retired English teacher, married fifty-five years, the father of six children and grandfather to thirteen grandchildren—twelve of them girls. I have three great grandchildren, two girls and one boy. I am a Korean War veteran, having served aboard the battleship USS New Jersey. After four years in the Navy, I married Mary Colette Shannon, went to college, earned a BA degree and eventually a Masters degree, and taught English in public school systems for thirty-five years, the last thirty-three years at Davenport West High School, Davenport, Iowa. I enjoy writing, reading, collecting music from 1920s-1950s, playing pool, and hanging out with my kids and their families.

BB62—The USS New Jersey

I was born in Saginaw, Michigan, joined the Navy when I was nineteen, got out at age twenty-three, and graduated from St. Ambrose College, Davenport, Iowa, with a BA in English at age twenty-six. I earned my BA degree in three years by attending every session the college offered, summer school included. By the time I graduated, I also had a wife (Mary Colette Shannon) and two children (Jane and Joe) and needed a job. I started teaching in Orion, Illinois. I estimate that during my teaching career I taught over 11,000 young adults in my classrooms. This is not to mention the others I met casually in the school building's cafeteria, library, gym, and halls, or in the parking lot and at sporting events. So it turns out that I'm a seventy-eight-year-old grandfather and great grandfather writing books for teens. At my age, perhaps I should be writing books like The Five People You Meet in Heaven. But I'm not. I'm writing books for teens and having fun doing it.
